What to expect
Founded in 1912 by Rev. Shodo Hara, the Wailuku Jodo Mission traces its roots to the Japanese sugarcane plantation communities of Central Maui. After establishing the Puunene Jodoshu Kyokaido, Rev. Hara rented a home near Wailuku town and set up a sanctuary that became a permanent spiritual home for plantation-era Japanese immigrants. The mission follows Jodo Shu, the Pure Land sect of Buddhism, and is one of 13 active Jodo missions across Hawaiʻi.
