What to expect
Founded in 1899 to serve Japanese sugar-plantation workers on the Hāmākua Coast, Honomū Hongwanji Mission is among the Big Island's long-established Jodo Shinshu congregations and a member temple of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. Temple records place its minister serving surrounding Hāmākua communities as early as 1899, reflecting the dense plantation-era Japanese population that settled this stretch of the island.
The plantation-era town of Honomū retains much of its historic character, the backdrop for the temple’s annual obon dance.
