Founded in 1901 as an affiliate of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, ʻEwa Hongwanji Mission has served ʻEwa's plantation-era Japanese community for over a century of Jodo Shin Buddhist practice. The temple holds its bon dance every third Saturday in June, an early-season fixture on the Oʻahu obon calendar. The dance grounds sit just down the road from the historic ʻEwa Sugar Mill, and 2026 marks the mission's 125th year.
The evening draws a strong local crowd for food, fellowship, and dancing. Food booths feature Tamura's Market bentos (furikake rice, Spam, hot dog, and fried chicken), fried noodles, chili rice bowl, teri burger, hot dogs, andagi by Da Andagi Guy, and a Kona Ice truck. The temple's roughly 29 active members are joined by volunteers from neighboring churches to staff the event each year.
